SAN MARCOS — After four months of renovation, the former English pub know as Penny Lane reopens Thursday with a new name, theme, menu and chef.
Inland Tavern at 1001 W. San Marcos Blvd. will specialize in California coastal cuisine, which chef Rob Conaway described Wednesday as an eclectic mix of flavors influenced by both Mexico and the Pacific Rim.
Tavern owner Pete Zacarias bought the 21-year-old pub in 2012 and last year decided to give it a makeover. Penny Lane was just a few blocks west of another English pub, Churchill’s, and he felt that changing tastes and demographics called for something more contemporary. He shut the restaurant down in September, intending to reopen within a month, but construction and equipment delivery delays dragged out the renovation for several months.
The restaurant held a soft opening on Monday, Jan. 12, and will host its grand reopening celebration on Thursday, Jan. 15.
