SAN MARCOS — One of San Marcos’ oldest restaurants, the 21-year-old Penny Lane Pub and Grill, will close later this month to make way for Inland Tavern Bar & Grill, a modern, California coastal cuisine concept.
Owner Peter Zacarias, who bought the 102-seat English-themed pub on San Marcos Boulevard almost two years ago, said there’s a lot of change under way in San Marcos and he felt Penny Lane was long overdue for an update. Even the bar’s regulars — whose arrival Zacarias said he can “set my watch to” — are cautiously embracing the change.
“We’ve eased them into it,” said Zacarias, a San Marcos resident. “There was some apprehension. Some people said ‘they’re changing our Cheers,’ but they trust what we’re doing, they know me, and they’re all on board now.”
